Ultrasonography

An ultrasonography , or ultrasound, records high-frequency sound waves through the body tissues to create a video or photographic images of a specific area. Used to diagnose a wide range of conditions and diseases, ultrasonography may be used by your Arlington, Texas gastroenterologist to create images of soft tissue structures, such as the gall bladder and liver. They are also commonly used to detect blockages in the blood vessels.

Another type of ultrasound that may be used by your Arlington gastroenterologist is called an endoscopic ultrasound, or EUS. This exam is oftentimes used to examine the lining and walls of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and rectum. Additionally, this exam may be used to evaluate the walls of the upper and lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including the colon and rectum. This type of ultrasound allows your Arlington gastroenterologist to collect images of the area in question using an endoscope outfitted with a small ultrasound device.

Reasons for an Ultrasonography

Beyond examining the walls of the upper and lower GI tract, an ultrasonopgraphy allows your Arlington gastroenterologist to view and study organs that are situated close to the GI tract. This inclueds the lungs, liver, gall bladder, and pancreas.

An ultrasonography of the GI tract can also be used to determine the cause of abdominal pain, extreme weight loss, or do assess the overall health of the esophagus, small intestine, and other nearby organs. If your gastroenterologist had previously detected an abnormal growth by X-ray or endoscopy, he may use an ultrasonography to further evaluate the issue.

Before the Procedure

Leading up to the ultrasonography, your Arlington gastroenterologist will request that you o not eat or dink anything after midnight the night before your procedure. It is also important for you to inform the medial staff of any medications you are taking, as well as which (if any) medications you are allergic to. Since you will be sedated during the procedure you will be required to have someone pick you up, and you will not be able to drive for 24 hours.
